To most people Louis J. Pinto is known as Gumby, a musician on his way to cementing his name in our entertainment industry’s music history, if he hasn’t done so already that is. When he was starting out as a wee lad dreaming about thrashing his drums amongst the best of them, he couldn’t have imagined that he was going to become a household name and considered as Pakistan’s top drummer by most, if not all. {Read More…}

In the summer of 08 , we got one of the most finest TV productions from COKE. The first season of Coke Studio was a great success both among the masses and the critics. It was a great production, very esthetically designed artwork : the set and the lights, a great house band featuring very fine musicians and above all, a great producer, Mr. Rohail Hyatt at his best. Since then, Coke studio has come a long way. In summer 09, the second season of Coke Studio was launched. It was even better in almost all aspects. One thing I will like to mention here, that we should all feel very proud of the fact that we have achieved something very big in the form of Coke Studio. Recording Live music is not an easy task. It’s a lot of hard work.

With the third season of the Coke Studio journey formally announced on 14 May at a press conference, the much-awaited first episode ‘Reason’ will now be airing on 06 June. The brand new season once again takes the audience to the heart of the live recording studio to witness unique performances — each attempting to reflect the rich musical heritage of Pakistan. The central theme this year is the process of creation and hence the first episode revolves around the rationale for creation. That the reason (or the driving force) has range, is taken into account as well: it can be ambition, an unrequited desire, devotion to a higher form and can be subliminal or overt. {Read More…}

We have come across an interesting yet a little shocking news that Sikander Mufti (Co-ven) will be playing drums in the Coke Studio season 3. The news has been disclosed on a TV show of Style360 by Omran Shafique of Mauj, who works closely with Sikander Mufti in Mauj.
We think with this, Sikander also gets a chance to fulfill his wishes to design a show. He says
I’ve always wanted to design show. I have so many ideas about light design, stage design and so forth. But here you have a show to play, you also have to see security and the ‘know-how’ is missing from the scene completely. For instance, on one song, let’s say I want dominantly red lights and at some point, I want a blue affect on stage, who should I say this to?
That also leaves us all to wonder if Sikander will be replacing Gumby or will this season feature two drummers? and If Sikander will replace Gumby why would that be?
Update:
To all that have read this little article.
Sorry to rain on your parade, but I just want to clarify that I WILL NOT be playing the “Drums” on the next Coke Studio Season!
I WILL, however, be playing PERCUSSIONS as part of the house band. Gumby is STILL the drummer!
