They both will be working on Adil Omar’s untitled debut album (coming in 2012).

According to Adil, FredWreck will be producing a track or two for his debut album, one with a special surprise guest.

FredWreck is a record producer from Los Angeles, California who got his big break when he became a producer for Dr. Dre’s newly founded Aftermath Records label and worked on his multi-platinum selling album ‘The Chronic 2001′, and went on to work with Snoop Dogg’s record label Dogghouse Records (now Doggystyle Records) and became a known producer on Tha Dogg Pound-affiliated material. He has produced tracks from Kurupt’s Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha and most of his next release, Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey; both released during the period the rapper had left Death Row. In 2007 he partnered up with songwriter Kara Dioguardi to produce songs for pop stars Britney Spears and Hilary Duff. He received an MTV Europe Music Award for Best Album for his production on Britney’s Black Out Album and Kara went on to be the new judge on American Idol. He has also produced for other hip hop and pop artists such as Kurupt, Eminem, Ice Cube, Westside Connection, Lil Kim, Xzibit, Nate Dogg, Everlast aka Whitey Ford, Cypress Hill, 50 Cent, Justin Bieber, Mobb Deep, and The Doors.

FredWreck’s music has been inspired by producers Dr. Dre, Mantronix, Marley Marl, and The Bomb Squad, FredWreck began experimenting with production equipment, recording techniques, and his skills as a DJ to carve out his own sound. The influence of East Coast Hip Hop, West Coast Hip Hop, Electro, Funk, Soul, Arabic and Rock helped give him a signature sound. From 1995 to 1997 he was hired by legendary Bomb Squad producer Hank Shocklee as an A & R executive at MCA/Universal Records where he oversaw the recordings of artists such as Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Immature, Al Green, King Tee, Shai, Bobby Brown and Soundtracks such as Dangerous Minds, Tales from the Hood, and others.

The Pakistan America Peace Through Music Project
A Musical Journey to Peace, Freedom and Understanding
(A Collaboration of The Sonic Peace Makers and SHINE HUMANITY)

Background:

Mention Pakistan today and what comes to the minds of most Americans is terrorism, poverty, and hopelessness. That’s all they see in the news. But Pakistan also has one of the world’s most diverse and rich cultures, equaled only by its spectacular natural beauty as home to part of Kashmir, the Khyber Pass and high mountain peaks like K2. Once upon a time in the not so distant past, Texan gun enthusiasts brought their prized antique revolvers to Peshawar’s gun smiths to make copies, actor Robert DeNiro posed for pictures with restaurant owners while vacationing in Chitral, and Mick Jagger tested his dance skills with Lahore’s most well-known Mujra dancers. And many of Pakistan’s greatest musicians and singers like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan regularly collaborated with their counterparts in Europe and America such as Peter Gabriel and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.

Two decades ago, America’s leaders failed to uphold our principles and fulfill a moral obligation to help rebuild Afghanistan and assist Pakistan with the painful aftermath of the Soviet-Afghan war, which included millions of Afghan refugees who still reside in Pakistan. In stark contrast, America helped rebuild its enemies Germany and Japan after WWII, but inexplicably abandoned its friends after the war in Afghanistan, a key factor in allowing extremists to begin their destructive swarm across Afghanistan and Pakistan’s western frontier and become a grave threat to the security and stability of the entire world. But today, while the wounds are deep and the challenges are great, the forces of light and sonic harmony are again on the ascendance. Pakistan today is home not just to 11 music video channels and has one of the most innovative and vibrant music scenes anywhere in the world. A country that has produced some of the greatest sitar and tabla players is today home of some of the finest singers, guitar shredders and drummers. Music pioneers like Junoon, the godfathers of “Sufi Rock,” are joined by Qawwali rockers like Mekaal Hasan and Aaroh, indie projects like Peshawar’s Sajid and Zeeshan, and Heavy Metal innovators like Akash and Karavan. In recent years Atif Aslam has become the most successful Pop singer in all of South Asia with a growing following world-wide.

The Project:

The Pakistan America Peace Through Music Project was inspired by the work of Greg Mortenson (author of the bestseller “Three Cups of Tea” and “Stones Into Schools”) and is based, among other things, on world music pioneer Manu Dibango’s declaration that musicians are “all from the same tribe” regardless of their race, nationality or religion and John Coltrane’s belief in the power of music to spread peace and harmony. Building on the millennia-long tradition of musical and cultural exchange in Pakistan and South and Central Asia more broadly, we will bring a group of leading musicians from the U.S. to Pakistan led by guitarist/producer Lanny Cordola (House of Lords, Giuffria, The Beach Boys), drummer/producer Matt Sorum (Guns n’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), singer/guitarist Todd Shea and many others for a month long musical caravan throughout the country, creating and performing with some of Pakistan’s most well known, talented and innovative artists such as Atif Aslam, Shehzad Roy, Strings, Arieb Azhar, Abda Parveen, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Rustam Fateh Ali Khan, Beo Rana Zafar and celebrated record producer Rohail Hyatt (Vital Signs, Coke Studio). The inspiring poetry of Allama Iqbal and other revered poets will be prominently featured as an artistic and cultural base for the musical collaboration. Later on in the year, the Pakistani musicians will come to the U.S. for performances and events joined by their American comrades (including members of Guns ‘n’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.), which will also include time for more song writing and recording. Both the Pakistani and American “legs” of the gathering will be filmed for a documentary. The music and film will then be completed and released for sale on CDs & DVDs.

Goals:

The project’s goals will be to bring Americans and Pakistanis closer together by erasing misconceptions and raising awareness of the diversity and beauty of Pakistan and its people, ultimately revealing the commonalities between Pakistani/Muslim and American cultures, to show Americans the Pakistan they never see in the mainstream media and to support Pakistan’s courageous artistic community, as well as raise funds and awareness to help establish and equip music schools and fund innovative health and education projects across Pakistan and Afghanistan. Once the initial project has been released, the music will continue with a series of collaborations with musicians and artists from all over the world to bring people together and help people in need.

Activities:

Musical fusion and celebration of diverse cultures will erase misconceptions and raise funding which will lead to a lasting positive effect on vulnerable children in developing nations, and help create a better, safer world for all Humanity

Project Message

“Music has incredible power to inspire and energize Human Beings to bridge divides and create a better world”
- Todd Shea, Chief Operating Officer

“Peace Through Music” DVD featuring members of Guns ‘n’ Roses, Lanny Cordola, Atif Aslam, Shehzad Roy, Strings, Rohail Hayat, Arieb Azhar, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Todd Shea & Many More!

The Sonic Peacemakers Music & Film Project:

The Musical Peace Project features Atif Aslam, Adil Omar, Shehzad Roy, Slash, members of Guns ‘N Roses, Velvet Revolver, Cypress Hill, Red Hot Chili Peppers and others. This is all very exciting and for a good cause.

“Adil will be rapping with Cypress Hill and other BIG surprise special guest on the Sonic Peacemakers Music and Film Project that we’re doing with some of the best Pakistani and American recording artists”, says Todd Shea.

About Todd Shea:

Todd Shea, a singer/songwriter and guitarist by profession in USA, a social worker and a humanitarian in Pakistan. He always used his music to perform humanitarian work and support charitable causes. He came to volunteer in Pakistan after the 2005 earthquake, a disaster that killed 80,000 people. Shea established a “no frills” charity hospital in Kashmir called CDRS, or Comprehensive Disaster Relief Services, which provides quality healthcare services to the people in the remote and earthquake-affected areas in northwest Pakistan. CDRS’ efforts are concentrated in Chikar, one of Pakistan’s poorest and most remote villages located about 25 miles from the Indian border with a population of about 150,000 people. He doesn’t have a college degree or a medical background, but told the Times, “I’m certainly not the most qualified person to take on the task of building…in this area at least…a revolutionary healthcare system, but I’m the one who’s here.” A musician prior to his time in Pakistan, Shea indicated that he once suffered from addiction issues. Now however, he “decided to get addicted to something that was good for other people.” In fact, Shea uses music to raise awareness about CDRS and their efforts, at one point performing at MTV’s studios in Karachi with a Pakistani musician. CDRS currently runs on $170,000 a year and served over 100,000 patients in 2008.

Todd Shea’s Message About The Project:

The project will promote peace and understanding through musical collaborations and a documentary film that will not only introduce America and the World to the great musicians and poets of Pakistan as they perform and create with some of America’s greatest musicians, but more importantly, will showcase all the wonderful attributes of Pakistan, its People and its rich culture that most Americans never see. Then, with a new perspective on Pakistan, we believe that everyday Americans will begin supporting projects which effectively bring help directly to Pakistan’s most vulnerable families and communities. After the recording session, Atif Aslam and producer Lanny Cordola met with prominent members of the Southern California Pakistani American Community at the home of Pervaiz and Almas Lodhie to introduce the project and its goals. Promoting organizations that are doing great Humanitarian work in Pakistan such as Developments In Literacy, Zindagi Trust, Greg Mortenson’s Central Asia Institute and many others, this project aims to highlight the efforts of The National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) to form partnerships with all governmental and non-governmental organizations, large and small, to work together towards ensuring that Pakistan meets the UN’s Millennium Development Goals of minimun 85% Basic Literacy by 2015.

There are significant costs associated with such a large undertaking, so we need your help to raise the funding needed to pay for the project’s production, recording, filming, mass duplication, marketing and travel expenses. Please give generously, your contributions are tax-deductible and represent an important investment in Pakistan. Thanks to Air Blue for becoming our first sponsor, donating the flights for the The Sonic Peacemakers travel in Pakistan this summer. Philanthropist Pervaiz Lodhie, Author Ethan Casey, Businessman Amin Hashwani and Professor Mark Levine are the official Ambassadors for the Sonic Peacemakers. Please note that all musicians and recording artists who are contributing their time and talents to this project are doing so completely free of charge.

Sadaf Fayyaz

Q1. Tell us a bit about your background, education and childhood.

I actually stopped going to school this year. Didn’t feel like it anymore. For now, I’m taking a year off just doing what I do, which is being a bit of a hermit and making music. I have a few things lined up regarding music related projects, hopefully those will work out.
As far as my childhood goes, I had an interesting childhood. Think of it as “Animal House” meets “The Sopranos”.

Q2. Tell us something about your musical training.

What musical training? – I picked up everything I do on my own. I have been writing, recording, mixing and making the occasional beat myself.

Q3. What message does your music reflect? Is it peace, love or any other?

No, I’m not Bono, nor do I want to be. I just do what I love, whether it’s to entertain you or to make you “think”. If you’re referring to political messages and what not, I guess my biggest thing would be skepticism. I encourage a skeptical attitude towards life; it’s a very healthy thing to adopt instead of blindly following things based on authority.

Q4. How do you manage all the music industry politics?

I don’t think I’ve reached that point of my career yet. I keep on reading a lot on the industry and I know how not to get screwed in contracts. I’ve got to look out for my best interests, right?

Q5. There is so much competition in the music industry, where do you see yourself after some years?

Successful!!!

Q6.How often do you jam?

I jam whenever I can, whether it is just me rapping on my own for a few friends or accompanied by a few friends on instruments.

Q7. What are your inspirations?

Johnny Cash, House of Pain, Neil Young, Everlast, Cypress Hill, N.W.A., Motörhead, Dr. Dre, Wu-Tang Clan, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Big Pun, Kool G Rap, George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Tupac Shakur, Nine Inch Nails, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Onyx, DJ Muggs, Gang Starr, Rick Rubin, Run DMC, Trent Reznor, The Rolling Stones, Rage Against the Machine, Mickey Rourke, System of a Down.

Q8. What was the first instrument that you learnt playing?

I don’t play instruments. I just write and rap and know how to do some beat making and sampling on the computer. I’ll probably end up learning a few. I’ve been playing around with my harmonica quite a bit lately. Imagine me playing the harmonica. Wouldn’t that be sweet?

Q9. When and how did you get interested in music?

I’ve always been into music. I’ve heard that my Mom used to listen to a lot of Pink Floyd when she was in the family way with me. That explains a lot. As far as rapping goes, the Wu-Tang Clan and Dr. Dre might have started that. Then shortly after, I got into Cypress Hill, Everlast, Tupac, Snoop, Nas, Kool G Rap, Big Pun, etc.

Q10. What are your plans? Would you remain solo or form any band?

Adil Omar is and will forever be a solo act. On stage, I sometimes use a backing band just for live performances. I’m open to super groups and bands as side projects in the future, but for now I’m working on developing Adil Omar, the artist, even further.

Q11. Who are your favorite bands and musicians?

This would be a big list; Johnny Cash, Motorhead, Nine Inch Nails, Everlast, Cypress Hill, DJ Muggs, Dr. Dre, Eminem when he hated his mother, RZA, DJ Premier, Gang Starr, Liquid Tension Experiment, Stravinsky, the list goes on.

Q12. Your motivation and learning comes from?

It comes from life and my over active imagination.

Q13. What is your biggest desire and expectation?

To be an icon: I want to make a comfortable living doing what I love, without compromising on my talent, art and integrity. I want to go down in history as one of the greatest artists in my field, and whether it happens or not, I’ll die trying to make it happen.

Q14. How do you take criticism?

It depends. I can take constructive criticism though it still doesn’t change me or my output, I’ll still always do what I want how I want. If it comes from people who aren’t a part of my target audience and honestly don’t know what they’re talking about, then it throws me off a little. Strangely, most of the hate and criticism I get is all for the wrong reasons, from people who really aren’t my target audience, and people who don’t know what they’re talking about.

Q15. How do you define music?

If there wasn’t any music, the world would probably have been a worse off place than it already is. Think about it. Failed artists are dangerous people. Imagine if they never had the chance to let that frustration out in the first place.

Q16. As an artist, how would you like to be remembered by people?

I’d like to be remembered in the Hip-Hop community as what Bill Hicks was to the comedy community. Most of all I’d like to be remembered as someone who actually took a chance. Someone who kids can look up to and (I know it sounds clichéd) but follow their dreams.

Q17. Lastly, what is your message?

Every one of you should add me on Face book, http://www.facebook.com/AdilOmarMusic – I mean, it’s one thing to read up on someone, but it’s another to actively follow and pay attention to them.
Amina Baig
Karachi

He is unsigned and he’s just 19. But Adil Omar remains one of Pakistan’s few hardcore rappers. Based in Islamabad, Adil isn’t targeting just Pakistan but an international audience. He has two songs on the upcoming indie flick Slackistan and that’s just one of his many projects. In this interview with Instep Today, Adil reveals more about his debut record and more…

Instep Today: You have the Untitled Adil Omar Project (UAOP) slated for 2011. What kind of sound dominates the album?

Adil Omar: It’s still not confirmed whether it’s going to be done and out by 2011. It could be 2012, realistically. It’s my debut and I’m putting a lot of work into it. It’s not just me rapping over “beats”; it’s going to be a work of art. I won’t reveal the very few but interesting guests I have as of yet. There will be involvement from various producers. I’m in talks with my boy Fredwreck about producing a track or two for it as well, so I’m very excited about that. There are a few more producers I’m in talks with… It’s all going to be heavy stuff as far as concepts go. Every beat will be a banger. I’ll be using a lot of live instrument sounds as well. I’m really picky about production quality, otherwise I would have had an album done already. This has to be “eargasmic” material and I’ll see to it that it is.

Instep Today: Is there a recurrent theme that you are employing in UAOP?

Adil Omar: Since it’s my introduction, look at it as an introduction to every side of me, my thoughts and my personality. Sure, there’s going to be some fiction in it too, some shock value only for entertainment, but a lot of it’s going to be up close and personal. Something that people can remember as a classic record and relate to in one way or another. I don’t just want to make people dance. I want to make them feel what I feel, step into my shoes and see the world through my eyes for the time they’re listening to me. Most of all, I just want to make good music. That’s my hunger and my driving force. The industry’s pushing such bulls**t now, it’s laughable what passes off as Rap & Hip-Hop these days. I don’t want to “take it back to the ’90s” or take myself too seriously, but I just want to make quality Hip-Hop music.

Instep Today: You have collaborated with B-Real for The Harvest, how did that materialize? Being an indie artist, how do you manage to get your work out there?

Adil Omar: B-Real’s been really helpful in terms of opening a lot of doors for me. I’m extremely grateful to him for that. The amount of exposure an artist can get from being on a Cypress Hill related project is huge. People might argue that B-Real and Cypress Hill aren’t what they were in the ’90s, but facts are facts, they’re still legends and the first Latino group ever to go platinum… As far as The Harvest and the song I did with B-Real goes, it’s his project, not mine. I just lent a hand and a contribution to it. I was put on and I’m very grateful for that.

Instep Today: What other projects, if any, are you involved in currently?

Adil Omar: I wish I could go into detail here but I don’t think I can. Well, maybe a few things. I’m working on a collaboration album on the side with Greydon Square called Serpents Of Eden. It’ll probably be released around the same time or before my debut album, independently. Featured guests so far are Penn Jillette (who I’ve worked with before) and James Randi. This isn’t a mainstream project by any means, it’s highly anticipated within our cult following as some sort of superhero collaboration between two sick artists. Though the Penn and James Randi features (among other possible ones) should bring considerable attention.

Other than that, I’m working on doing more live performances. I’m currently working on a new music video for the launch of my official website. I’m being considered to do the soundtrack of a major Hollywood film with an Oscar winning lead actor, but I don’t think I can say who it is for now. That’s in the future though, let’s see what happens. I’m doing tons of collaborations on other rapper’s and producer’s projects go. So yes, my hands are full for now, I love work, and I have tons of exciting stuff I’m working on.

Instep Today: Have you approached any record labels for your album as yet, especially locally? If so, how was the response?

Adil Omar: I’m not planning on releasing my album locally; it’s not my target audience. I’d rather be a rapper on an international scale who happens to be Pakistani, rather than a Pakistani rapper. Why typecast and limit yourself like that? Music is universal and should be for all people, released at a wider scale. I’m in talks with a few people to see what’s up. I’m definitely aiming for a major and global release for my album when the time comes.

Instep Today: You, as well as your work features in the film Slackistan. Was making music for somebody else’s project different from working on your own?

Adil Omar: I’m used to working for other people’s projects for now. If I see it as a good promotional opportunity or it’s something I believe in, I hop on. Slackistan was a lot of fun. I make a cameo playing myself, for comic relief, and I’ve done a song for the soundtrack. I did two actually, a solo one, and one with Uzair Jaswal, but it wasn’t included, so we might release it sometime in the future from our own side. But yeah, I do recommend Slackistan for when it comes out, it’s actually very funny.

Instep Today: Within Pakistan, your popularity so far rests in Islamabad, have you considered taking your act to other parts of the country? What kind of people make up your audience in Islamabad?

Adil Omar: I wouldn’t say I have much of an audience in Islamabad either. It’s all on the internet. Who knows, I might have an audience in Islamabad but it’s probably not considered “cool” to be an Adil Omar fan yet. I don’t feel like a celebrity when I go out. I mean, I get recognized a little bit, people have come up to me and taken pictures with me, but as far as an active audience goes, I think that’s all on the internet right now.

Instep Today: With so many rap/hip hop artists in the world, what are you bringing to the table that you feel sets you apart?

Adil Omar: I’m just doing what I enjoy. No gimmicks either. I make the sort of music a real person and a real Hip-Hop head could feel and relate to. With all this party/spaceship/hipster bullshit being forced down everybody’s throat at the moment, I think I’m an escape from that. Yet, at the same time, I have a little bit of a sense of humor which sets me apart of super-underground rappers who take themselves too seriously. I bring a balance. I bring something people can relate to as well as have fun to. Most importantly, I just do me. I don’t take advice on content or what I should do. I honestly don’t listen to hate or criticism either. I just do what I love doing, the way I love doing it, and I’m glad I’ve found a growing audience for what I do. It’s in your face, rough neck music with a little bit of a conscience.

Instep Today: Currently the mainstream music scene in Pakistan is predominantly pop-rock, would you consider branching out the genre? If so, what might you dabble in?

Adil Omar: I think I answered most of this with the record label question.

Instep Today: Your words, for someone who is not yet 20, are jaded. Where do you draw your ideas for lyrics from?

Adil Omar: I’m young, but I feel like I’m 50 at times. I won’t say I’ve had the hardest life. Everybody has ups and downs. I’m just a skeptic and a realist by nature. Plus, music’s my outlet. If I didn’t do it I’d probably be a messed up person. I get my ideas from my own life, what goes on around me, reading, isolating myself, and also my naturally over-active imagination.

Instep Today: All artists want to put something out there with their work, what is it that you would like for your audience to gain through your music?

Adil Omar: I just want them to be themselves and embrace who they are. That’s my main message and the root of all my ideas. Be yourself, love who YOU are. Don’t aspire to be me, or anybody else. Be you, do you.

The name might not ring a bell; but apparently this song has being doing the rounds all year. The video for the single has been on Youtube for ages as well but it just recently made it’s way onto one of those ‘fresh’ playlists on music channels. Uzair Jaswal‘s name might have just started to appear on television but he is quite the star in his hometown, Islamabad. Uzair reportedly also collaborated with Adil Omar on the soundtrack of indie Isloo flick, Slackistan.

‘Yaheen‘ is one of those perfectly well-rounded songs that one would expect all radio stations to be playing nonstop and all at the same time. The kind of tune that you eventually wish you wouldn’t hear ever again but only because it was being played around you till it came out of your ears (almost literally).

The song is soft, but has a slightly melancholic edge to it, which saves it from stumbling into the valley of the shadow of bubblegum-pink pop. The words to the song are kind of on the cheerlessly contemplative side as well. The effect is not completely depressing however and ‘Yaheen’ becomes one of those songs you would want to upload on your iPod right away.

The best thing about the song though? Uzair Jaswal can actually carry a tune. He has a voice that is steady and solid, but is flexible too. He can go into different pitches without losing the tune; which is rare in most music hopefuls, most of the time.

The video, directed by Usman Malkani is average. Uzair sings to a weeping girl, tinted sepia. There is nothing seriously wrong with the video – it is simple, but simplicity can be strikingly played up as well. Most photographs or films or music videos that have stood out in our memory have had that something extra even in the face of zero special effects or even a complex storyboard (think ‘Anjane’ by Strings); the ‘Yaheen’ video simply doesn’t have that something extra.

Luckily though ‘Yaheen’ is a song that does not need a kick-ass video to be carried around by. It stands quite confidently on its own melodic feet.
