While having a small session with Asad Qizilbash (Vocalist/founder/composer) of band Swaras, he announced very animatedly about their debut song. “It is our great pleasure to let you all know that our debut song “Aag Kuch Aysi Lagi” has been selected to be a part of “Canadian Heritage” at “The National Library of Archives” in Ottawa Canada. We are very proud to achieve this honor as a Pakistan-Canadian band on our first composition.” Asad declares very excitedly.
“Swaras was formed in June 2009 in Toronto, Canada. The whole idea of our music is based on amalgamating “World Music” with eastern vocals which was never done before. Swaras’ first single “Aag Kuch Aysi Lagi” on Nov 27th during Eid-ul-Azha’s time through our website, {Read More…}

Josh, ADP rock Karachi (Concert Review)

Categorized Under: Articles, Concerts No Comments

By Khaver Siddiqi

Given the nature of the current socio-political climate, venues, musicians and organisers are wary of what to expect at a concert. Likewise, the people themselves also share a sense of cautiousness when going out and about. Thankfully, that wasn’t the mood when JoSH, Aunty Disco Project and 90 Degrees performed recently at the Royale Rodale in Karachi.

The concert kicked off with 90 Degrees. Though a relatively unknown band, the members of the group should be commended for performing whilst the organisers were still trying to work out the sound check. This didn’t bode well for 90 Degree’s performance as the sound was all over the place during its performance. However, the band deserved an A for effort as not that many bands can pull off a decent cover of Sajjad Ali’s songs (including Sajjad Ali’s own cover of Didi by Khaled, Babiya). {Read More…}

EP Better Than Ever?

Categorized Under: Articles 4 Comments

by Hasan Faridi

It has been approximately 3 years since the disband of the influential Pakistani rock band EP (Short for Entity Paradigm). For Pakistan, this breakup was big.

Who can forget EP’s album Irtiqa released in 2003? From the abstract cover to the musical melodies, Irtiqa was an extraordinary concept. Filled with progressive and heavy metal influences, this beast of an album made a stand. Suiting everyone’s individual taste, Irtiqa contained the likes of all the hits, some later being made into music videos. {Read More…}

Mekaal Hasan Formulating musical magic

Categorized Under: Articles One Comment

The musician who has wowed people with his stellar compositions and beautiful videos speaks about ‘hit songs’ and how the Pakistani music industry can be helped out of its current slump.

By Amina Baig

1.6180339887. That is what Mekaal Hasan – the musician and producer is: the golden ratio. And if it seems too clinical to reduce a man to a bunch of numbers, allow me to elucidate.

Mekaal Hasan seems to have this whole perfection thing going on for him, which might not make him seem too exciting, and probably inspires thoughts of him sitting in his studio planning the next melody he will mix flawlessly, but that also is just reducing him to mere adjectives. When one comes across someone who commands instant awe or immediate wariness, both thanks to the abovementioned attributes, and seems to actually be quite … not what you expected, how do you describe him? {Read More…}

Strings wow Lahore audience with classic Pakistani pop

Categorized Under: Articles No Comments

Strings duo Faisal Kapadia and Bilal Maqsood are currently going through the major cities of Pakistan as part of a concert tour. Having played a Valentine’s Day show for the Isloo crowd, Strings made their way to LUMS in Lahore on February 17, and sent an already keyed-up audience into absolute adrenaline-rushed mode.

While it is always fabulous to hear Strings sing – this particular performance was made even better by the fact that Bilal and Faisal sang a medley of pop songs by various Pakistani artists of yore. {Read More…}

Living on the Edge MUST be banned

Categorized Under: Articles, Tv Shows 27 Comments

I have always been a fan of the dare show “Living on the Edge” since the times when it was just a street show. As the show grew and reached the masses the pattern changed massively and Waqar Zaka (Host/Concept writer) went on Pakistan tour to find the most daring person of Pakistan.

During the last season, there were a few acts which turned out to be shameful instead of daring and the show went off for a while. Waqar Zaka made his apologies on ARY Musik and we thought may be those acts won’t repeat in future. {Read More…}

By Aamna Haider Isani

Defying a tradition of opulence that comes with being Noor Jehan’s granddaughter, Sonya Jehan has emerged as someone who is refreshingly real

Sonya Jehan is radiant. The world knows her as a half-Pakistani Indian actress and we are quite happy with rights on her being just that. Born as the legendary Madam Noor Jehan’s granddaughter to a Pakistani father (Akbar Rizvi) and French mother (Florence Villier), she is now married to an Indian banker (Vivek Narain) and is shifting homes from Delhi to Mumbai as we speak. {Read More…}
